Why Iran?

Of the 37 steel projects in the Persian Gulf at varying stages of completion, 18 are located in Iran. Almost USD 14 bn worth of steel projects are underway in Iran and of all the countries in the Middle East, Iran is the only one that is not heavily dependent on imports of iron ore feedstock for steel production. The country has significant reserves, estimated at 4.5 billion tons, spread across five main locations. It also has considerable quantities of coal, meaning Iran is the only country in the Gulf with the feedstock resources required to become self-sufficient in steel production.

One of the Iran's other major advantage is its access to gas. The country sits on the world's 2nd natural gas reserves after Russia. Another eventual Iran’s advantage is the country less manpower cost which assumes as new steel making cost factor.

Iran is the present Middle East's leading steel producer; however, it has been importing ever-increasing amounts of steel since 1994. There are in total 10 semis manufacturers in Iran and in fact, production of finished steel products has grown faster in Iran than semis, over the past years. This trend is likely to continue in the coming years and making good opportunity for semis manufacturers in other countries to make good profits out of it.

In the recent past, construction of about eight new steel melting shops with total production capacity of 6.4 mio tons per year was started in Iran. Semis total production capacity may exceed 16 mio tons per year after the completion of these projects, however, still a large quantity of semis will need to be imported, to meet the domestic requirement thereafter.
